“Let’s sit over here,” Gus motioned to a bench as they walked through a park eating ice cream.
“Have I thanked you for coming to see that chick flick with me?” Harley asked as they sat down.
“A couple of times,” he laughed. “It wasn’t that bad.”
“Total chick flick.”
“Yeah. But at least there was some sporting action in it,” he shrugged.
“There was like one scene at a baseball field,” she rolled her eyes.
“I’m easy to please,” he smiled.
“Hey Gus…that karaoke scene…I wasn’t that bad last week, was I?” she asked nervously and he laughed.
“No. You are definitely better at karaoke than Cameron Diaz,” he assured her.
“Thank god,” she exhaled. “I still can’t believe you got me to sing in front of all of those people!”
“You were great, they loved you.”
“They were drunk! You…you, they loved,” she argued. “I don’t think I told you how impressed I was! I think I was in shock the rest of the night. You were amazing. You put Bono to shame.”
“She moves in mysterious ways…” he crooned and she smiled brightly at him.
“Very, very nice. While you’re busy showing off, your ice cream is melting,” she teased him and he licked at his cone quickly to stop the dripping.
“That should probably teach me a lesson, huh?”
“Probably won’t,” she shrugged and smiled over at him when she noticed his chocolate ice cream mustache. She leaned over and caught him off guard when she kissed his lips to get rid of the mess. “You had some ice cream on your lip,” she explained.
“Yeah? How was it?” he asked quietly, their faces still close together.
“Really good,” she answered and he closed the small distance between them and kissed her, each of them deepening the kiss as time passed.
Gus went to move his hands to her face when he realized one of them was occupied with a melting ice cream cone. He considered tossing the cone away for a brief second, but decided against it, not wanting to rush things too much – it was the first time Harley deepened a kiss, and he didn’t want to scare her away.
He put his free hand on her cheek and pulled away from her kiss, “It must have been really good,” he whispered as he stroked her cheek with his thumb.
“Yep,” she nodded and sat back against the bench.
Gus put his arm behind her and finished his ice cream as a comfortable silence came over them. Harley sneaked a peek over at him as he chomped on his cone and the corners of her mouth turned up in amusement. She looked forward again and watched a couple walking their dog through the park. She smiled as they stopped and kissed, but her smile turned into a frown when the man took the woman’s hand in his as they continued down the walk. She and Gus had been dating for a few weeks and tonight was their first real kiss. They had kissed before - short, almost friendly, goodnight kisses, but nothing more serious until a few minutes ago. They haven’t held hands yet, though Gus often would put his hand in the small of her back to guide her into a room or run his finger up and down her arm while they were at dinner or talking. They were keeping things casual, or at least she was. She was pretty sure the second she hinted that she was ready for something more, he would be more than happy to oblige. She rolled her eyes at how arrogant that sounded, but she had to admit she was enjoying being the center of a man’s affection after so long. True, she may not have enjoyed it so much with a man other than Gus, but she was not going to over think this. She was just going to live in the moment. With Gus, she couldn’t help but add. She was pulled away from her thoughts when she noticed Gus shifting beside her. She looked over at him and caught him wince as he wiped his mouth with a napkin.
“What’s wrong?” she asked.
“Nothing,” he shrugged.
“Liar. You know, actually you’ve been shifting like that all night, what is wrong?” she asked and then a smile broke out on her face. “Never mind, I know what the problem is,” she smirked.
“There’s no problem,” he insisted.
“The problem is that you can’t roller skate and you spent most of last night on your ass!” she teased and he glared at her.
“I can skate, I just can’t do it on a wooden floor. I used to play ice hockey, okay, I can skate!” he argued and she laughed.
“I wish I would have had my camera when those ten year olds on probably their first date separated and skated around your fallen body. Still holding hands and everything. True love,” she sighed dramatically.
“Yeah, you wouldn’t be laughing if you had to spend the last three hours sitting on your sore tailbone.”
“I thanked you a million times for going to the movie! Why didn’t you say something, we could have done something else or gotten you one of those donuts, grandpa,” she elbowed him in the side, still laughing.
“Funny, you’re funny,” he replied as he shifted again.
“Come on, let’s get you off your butt and walk,” she said as she stood up and grabbed his arm to pull him to his feet.
“Finally, you show some mercy,” he teased as they started walking from the park. “Hey, I want to stop and get some coffee,” he said as they approached a Starbucks. “You want something?”
“No. I think I’ll wait out here, it’s crowded in there,” she replied and he nodded before he ducked into the coffee shop leaving her on the sidewalk.
She looked in through the window as he got in line, and he turned and winked at her when he caught her eye. She smiled and turned away from the window, her thoughts going back to the couple in the park. She would without a doubt label Gus as a friend, a good friend, her best guy friend after her brother, but she wondered if the boyfriend label fit him better. She was attracted to him, of course. When she talked to Shannon, she always mentioned how smart and funny he was, Shannon was always the one to tack on good looks as one of his positive aspects, but of course Harley noticed. She’d have to be dead not to notice his dark eyes or the fullness of his pink lips. But it had been so long since she felt attracted to any man, she wasn’t sure how to deal with those feelings. How Gus felt about her was another story – she had thought he was attracted to her from their first kiss and he was more than open about his feelings on their second date, but in the weeks since then, he’s hardly made a move. Maybe they were just friends, they could just be friends, right? she asked herself as she looked through the window again just as Gus got his coffee and started out the door. He held the door open for an attractive college-aged girl, but never took his eyes off of Harley.
“So much for not over thinking,” she said quietly as he made his way over to her.
“What?” he asked.
“Gus…” she started. “We’re friends, right?” she asked and he winced slightly at her question.
“Well, I…I was kind of hoping we were more than that,” he answered with a sigh. “Aren’t we?”
Harley hesitated and he looked at her expectedly, “Yes,” she replied quietly.
“You don’t sound too sure.”
“Gus, you were…” she paused and took a breath, “unexpected.”
“So were you,” he replied. “I was just trying to get a sandwich,” he teased and she smiled.
“Well, I’m glad you’re always hungry. I am,” she assured him as she grabbed the bottom of his t-shirt and took a step closer to him.
“Good,” he whispered before he put his arm around her and kissed her. “You don’t kiss all your friends like you kissed me back in the park do you?” he asked as they continued walking down the sidewalk.
“No. Only Shannon,” she said casually and he stopped walking.
“Don’t tease me,” he replied with a wink and she rolled her eyes.
“Sorry!” Harley exclaimed when she saw Gus standing outside of her building. “I know, I’m late. Stupid doctor made me wait forever!”
“That’s okay,” Gus replied. “You were at the doctor? Something wrong?” he asked, concerned.
“No, different kind of doctor,” she smiled and kissed him quickly, but he grabbed her around the waist and held the kiss a little longer. “Come on up, I want to change. Are we going to have time to get something to eat? I’m starving and I really think I need something in my stomach if we’re going to be drinking wine all night,” she rambled as she waved to the security guard on duty and Gus followed her up to her apartment.
“You are very talkative tonight,” he laughed. “I’m having trouble keeping up with you. We can still eat, we don’t have to be there at any certain time. Or we could just go eat, we don’t have to go to the wine tasting if you don’t want to.”
“No, I do, it sounds like fun,” she called from her bedroom where she went to change.
Gus caught a glimpse of her arms as she changed her shirt and he swallowed hard and sat on the couch, where he couldn’t see into her bedroom.
“So where do you want to eat?” he asked, trying to get his mind off of what she was doing in the bedroom.
“I’m kind of craving a salad, maybe pizza,” she answered.
“How about Mikey’s? Sound good?” he suggested.
“Perfect,” she said as she came out of her room and peeked into the living room. “That should be quick. I will be done in 5 minutes, I swear,” she added before she rushed into the bathroom to fix her makeup and hair.
Gus was just about to look at his watch when she came out of the bathroom. “How’d I do?” she asked and he looked her up and down.
“Beautiful,” he answered and she rolled her eyes.
“I meant time wise,” she clarified.
“Decent,” he teased. “Ready?” he asked and she nodded before they left her apartment.
“Gus, we drank a lot of wine tonight,” Harley said as Gus slid into the cab next to her.
“I know,” he laughed as he put his head back on the seat. “Too much.”
“Way too much,” she agreed. “But I had fun.”
“Yeah?” he asked, lifting his head and looking over at her.
“It has a nose of truffles and cherry?” she mocked him and he shrugged.
“I had no clue what I was talking about,” he laughed. “Sounded like I did, though, right?”
“Oh yeah, that lady was very pleased with your performance. Did she slip you her number?”
“I threw it away, I promise,” he said, holding up his left hand.
“I think you’re supposed to swear with your right hand up. You must be drunk,” she teased.
“Nope. Just left-handed,” he replied. “I really did throw her number away,” he added seriously.
“I know. I saw you,” Harley nodded.
“Don’t want anyone’s number but yours,” he continued, his face close to hers.
“Good thing you already have it,” she whispered before he closed the small distance between their mouths and kissed her.
He moved his hands up and cupped her face in them as they both deepened the kiss. Harley couldn’t hold back the quiet moan that escaped from her throat as his tongue slid against hers and he took it as a cue to continue until they were both out of breath.
“Wow,” Harley breathed when they finally broke the kiss and inhaled deeply as Gus continued kissing down her neck. She struggled to find another word to describe what she was feeling, but when his tongue found the sensitive spot behind her ear, she gave up and buried her hands into his hair. She let him continue his assault on her neck for a few more moments, then pulled his head up and kissed him again. As the kiss deepened, she leaned into him and tried to climb into his lap, but hit her head on the roof of the car. Hard.
“Ow,” she groaned as she broke off the kiss and rubbed the top of her head.
“This is probably a bad idea,” Gus said and Harley nodded as she tried to slide off his lap, but their legs were tangled together and she fell between the seat and the floor ungracefully.
“Really bad idea,” she agreed, laughing as she reached up and struggled to pull herself up onto the seat since Gus was laughing at her too hard to be of any help. She finally succeeded and fell back into the seat with a sigh. Gus had suddenly stopped laughing and she looked over at him to see why when she saw him looking down at her hand, which was still clinging to his thigh at his crotch from where she grabbed to pull herself up.
“Oh god,” she groaned as she pulled her hand back quickly and covered her face, embarrassed. “This night...”
Gus slid his arm around her shoulder and pulled her into his side, “Obviously, I enjoyed it. I would just enjoy it more if we weren’t in the back seat of a taxi,” he teased and she uncovered her face.
“God, I feel like a teenager in the back of daddy’s Caddy,” she sighed. “You…”
“Me what?” he asked curiously, narrowing his eyes at her.
“You…are very good at the kissing thing,” she finished.
“So are you,” he replied and kissed her again.
“Really good,” she reaffirmed between kisses.
Gus’s mouth had just moved back down to her neck when the cab driver cleared his throat and they both pulled apart and looked up at him.
“Your stop,” he said, pointing to Harley’s building.
“Oh,” Gus said and got out of the car, pulling Harley with him. “Will you wait a few minutes for me?” he asked the driver who nodded, but pointed to the meter.
“Wait? Stay,” Harley said as she grabbed him around his waist and stepped closer to him.
Gus put one arm around her and used the other to push a piece of hair out of her face behind her ear. He slid his hand behind her neck and kissed her cheek. “Not tonight,” he replied softly and she lowered her eyes to his lips. “Some night,” he assured her, “but not on a half-drunk night,” he added and she nodded into his hand. “Let me walk you up.”
“It’s okay. I can make it,” she said and he looked at her skeptically.
“You sure? You remember the whole ‘falling between the seats’ thing?” he teased and she poked a finger into his side.
“Only half-drunk, remember?” she smirked. “Call me tomorrow?”
“Goodnight,” he replied and kissed her one last time before she pulled away and let herself into her building and he got back into the cab.
“Hey,” Gus said as he walked up to the counter where Harley was making coffee.
“Not so loud,” she replied as she turned around and leaned across the counter to greet him with a kiss.
“You have a headache too?” he asked.
“Bad, bad wine,” she nodded. “So…I have class tonight and tomorrow, but I thought maybe we could do dinner on Friday?” she suggested casually.
“Definitely,” he nodded. “How about I bring some stuff over and we’ll cook and stay in?
“We’ll cook?”
“Yes. We will. I know you don’t like to or can’t, I’m not really sure which, but there’s gotta be a first time for everything, right?” he asked and she raised her eyebrows.
“I suppose so,” she nodded slowly. “Friday it is. My kitchen. Seven?”
“I’ll be there,” he replied. “I have to run, got a meeting to make this headache worse in a few minutes. And I have a lunch meeting tomorrow, so I won’t see you until Friday.”
“Alright. Do you need me to get anything for dinner?” she asked.
“How about dessert?” he suggested.
“I can handle that,” she smiled and he kissed her, quickly but seriously. “See you Friday,” she sighed as their lips lost contact and he squeezed her hand before he left.
“Have I thanked you for coming to see that chick flick with me?” Harley asked as they sat down.
“A couple of times,” he laughed. “It wasn’t that bad.”
