After dinner, they got up and mingled with their guests. Everyone in Springfield was there, except the Spaulding family, which made the evening even better for Harley and Gus.
"Hey guys," Harley greeted the table of cops that were off and able to make the party. "Thanks for coming."
"We're glad to be here," Franklin replied. "It's a great party."
"And the food is amazing," another officer said.
"Well that you'll have to tell the cook. My dad made everything," Harley explained.
"Wow, you guys should get married more often," John teased.
"No, no, we're hoping just this once sticks," Gus laughed. "Well, we have to go mingle. Thanks for coming and enjoy yourselves," he added before he and Harley moved on to the next table.
By the time Blake and Cassie came to get them for their 'first' dance, they had talked to more people than they had their whole lives and both of their faces were sore from smiling so much.
"How did you do this three times? Smiling and talking to everyone, it's exhausting," Gus said quietly as they headed onto the dance floor.
"Tell me about it," she laughed as he took one of her hands in his and pulled her close as the music started.
"I still can't believe we're married. Isn't that crazy? We've been married for almost four months and I'm still afraid this is all just a dream," he said quietly, his face close to hers.
"Well, if it is a dream, I hope I never wake up," she replied with a kiss.
After a few dances, Harley took Frank's date, Amanda inside the house to watch the video of the wedding and Blake, Cassie and Reva joined them.
"What a beautiful wedding," Amanda gushed at the end. "You and Gus make such a great couple. It's so obvious how much in love you are with each other. And you like each other too, like even if you weren't a couple, you would be really good friends. You're lucky to have that kind of love. It's very rare."
"Well, I sure have gone through my share of try-outs," Harley laughed and Amanda looked confused.
"Nevermind," Blake said. "So Harley, I know I told you that you couldn't get pregnant before the wedding, but now that you guys are married."
"Blake, please," Harley interrupted.
"What, do you not want to have kids?" Cassie asked.
"Yes we do, but it's not happening yet," was all Harley said in response.
"Well don't wait too long. I mean, let's face it, none of us are twenty-nine anymore. That clock is ticking away," Blake said.
"I'm going to go find my husband," Harley said with a forced smile and left the house. "Thanks for the reminder, Blake," she mumbled as she headed for the bar once she got outside and grabbed a beer from a cooler and headed over to the corner of the yard where the kids were playing.
"I just love it when you twist off that cap with your bare hands, it's very sexy," Gus said into her neck as he came up behind her.
Harley laughed and leaned back against him, letting out a sigh.
"What's wrong?" he asked.
"Nothing. It's nothing."
"You're lying. But that's okay. If you want to talk about it, I'm here."
Harley smiled up at him. "What would I do without you?"
"You'll never get the chance to find out," he replied.
"Let's go dance," she said. "This is our party and I'm sick of being depressed during it."
"You're on. I just want to thank everyone for coming before people start heading out," Gus said as he took her hand and they headed for the stage.
"Excuse me," he began into the mic. "Hi everyone, sorry to interrupt the music, but Harley and I just wanted to thank everyone for coming tonight and sharing this with us. We know we did it in an unusual way, but hey, that's us!" he joked. "But seriously, being married to this woman is the smartest thing I have ever done. And we both know how lucky we are to have found each other in this crazy world and we can't wait to spend the rest of our lives together. So thank you for coming, we hope you have a great time, and
drive safely," he finished and they found an empty spot on the dance floor.
"You know, I have waited my whole life for someone like you. I just didn't know it until I met you," Harley said as Gus held her close while they danced.
"Life has a crazy way of working itself out, doesn't it?" he asked rhetorically. "Because of you, I got past all that stuff that was killing me. And in each other we found a friend, a lover…"
"A partner. In everything," she added. "I love you so much."
"I love you too, Harley," he replied quietly as his hand brushed across her cheek and their lips met in a deep kiss full of passion for each other.
